Jockeys Jake Barton and Carl Williams suffered injuries in a spill in Saturday's eighth race at Turf Paradise. The incident occurred on the far turn in the 1 1/16-mile race when Barton's mount, It's the Captain, was racing between horses and fell. Williams, aboard Red Neck Bill, could not avoid the fallen horse and went down as well. Barton suffered a broken jaw and was scheduled for surgery Sunday. Williams suffered three cracked ribs and two bruised vertebrae. Williams was kept in the hospital Sunday for observation and was expected to be released Monday. It's the Captain had to be euthanized, while Red Neck Bill managed to escape injury.
