Jockeys Baze, Pereira to return Thursday from spills
ARCADIA, Calif. – Jockeys Tyler Baze and Tiago Pereira are scheduled to resume riding on the eight-race program at Santa Anita on Thursday after being involved in recent spills.
Baze has not ridden since May 19 but has worked horses in the last week. He is booked on four mounts on Thursday, including Highland Lass in the seventh race, an optional claimer for 3-year-old fillies.
Baze had intended to return in late May, but postponed his return because of body soreness.
Pereira was unseated in a spectacular spill in Saturday’s Snow Chief Stakes on turf after his mount Waya Ed clipped heels and fell. Waya Ed was euthanized as a result of a tibia injury, track officials said.
Pereira did not ride on Sunday. He is booked on four mounts Thursday.
◗ Trainer Ryan Hanson has been fined $500 for a medication violation, and jockey Alonso Quinonez has been suspended three days for careless riding, according stewards’ decisions announced Sunday.
Hanson was cited when Wonderful Lie tested in excess of the permitted level of betamethasone, a corticosteroid used to relieve joint pain. The overage was found after Wonderful Lie finished eighth in race 8 on April 13.
Quinonez was suspended for Sunday and June 14-15 for failing to maintain a straight course on Proper Drink in the fifth race last Saturday. Proper Drink finished fourth and was disqualified and placed fifth.
