Jockey Martin escapes injury in spill

Mary Rampellini|Oct 16, 2004

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Jockey Eddie Martin Jr. escaped serious injury in the 10th race Friday night at Lone Star Park when he was thrown from his mount, Lupe's Love, after she clipped heels with another rival midway on the final turn of a one-mile dirt race for conditioned claimers. Lupe's Love did not appear to suffer any major injuries.

Officials said Martin complained of soreness in his right bicep, but had no plans to go to the hospital. Martin returned to riding on Thursday night for the first time since suffering a hairline fracture to his collarbone at Arlington Park in September. He won with his first mount back, Its My Pleasure, for Michael Gill, the nation's leading owner. The horse was trained by Gammy Vazquez.

Earlier this year, Martin won the spring riding title at Lone Star.
