Jockey leader Ferrer has four-win (two stakes) day

Jose Ferrer went into Sunday's showcase card for New Jersey-breds at Monmouth Park leading the track's jockey standings, and didn't let up the pace. He piloted four winners, including two of the day's three stakes winners - Liz's Cable Girl in the $60,000 Eleven North Handicap for fillies and mares, and Chunnel in the $60,000 Charles Hesse III Handicap for older horses.
Liz's Cable Girl ($6.20) led all the way in the Eleven North with Ferrer in the irons. After the filly ticked off splits of 22.40 seconds for the quarter and 44.94 seconds for the half, she took a one-length lead into the stretch, but was confronted by favored Cee Bee Gee Bee, those two distancing themselves from the field. Liz's Cable Girl hung on to win by a neck, stopping the clock in 1:09.20 for the six furlongs. It was 9 3/4 lengths back to Love Came to Town in third.
“She broke a little flat-footed," Ferrer said in a track release. "Nothing bad. I wasn’t concerned at all. But I knew I would get to [the lead] quickly. She’s not just fast. She has some toughness to her. And we can see she likes to win.”
This was the first career stakes victory for Liz's Cable Girl, a Cable Boy filly trained by Patrick McBurney for the partnership of John Cocce, Lisbeth Dodd, Peter Donnelly, and Gerard Melley. Third in the Regret Stakes at Monmouth earlier this year, she came in off an allowance victory at the track.
Earlier in the day, Ferrer piloted Chunnel ($5.80) to a pace-stalking victory in the Hesse. The gelding rallied between pacesetter We B Jammin and longshot Prendimi in the stretch, and prevailed by a neck in a blanket finish. Prendimi held second by a half-length over the rallying Fuzzy Muzzle, with We B Jammin another three-quarters back in fourth. The final time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:43.89.
This was the 49th career start, but first stakes victory, for Chunnel, who was stakes-placed at Monmouth in 2014 and 2015. The English Channel gelding is trained by Jorge Navarro for Final Turn Racing.
Ferrer was denied a sweep of the day's three New Jersey-bred stakes, as he did not have a mount in the $60,000 New Jersey Breeders Handicap, won by Amatteroftime and Paco Lopez.
Amatteroftime ($6.80) stalked the brisk fractions of 21.86 and 44.45 set by Evil Monkey, rallied to that one in the lane, and prevailed to win by a neck in a long drive, finishing the six furlongs in 1:09.22. It was 2 3/4 lengths back to I Am the Man, who edged favored Bubba's Will by a neck for third.
Amatteroftime, who races as a homebred for New Farm, was a 3-year-old taking on older horses for trainer Jason Servis. The Eskendereya colt won for the third time in his past four starts in his stakes debut.
“I really wasn’t looking at this race originally, but he was ready to run and it came up and we decided at the last minute to take a shot," Servis said. "It worked out pretty well. He’s a handsome horse. He’s just starting to figure it out."
