ARCADIA, Calif. - Jockey Juan Hernandez, who has taken a commanding lead in the standings at the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting in recent weeks, rode five winners on Saturday’s nine-race program, including four of the five stakes for California-breds.  Hernandez won the $100,000 Crystal Water Stakes on Carmelita’s Man ($4.80) and the $100,000 Thor’s Echo Stakes on Desmond Doss ($10) in the first half of the program. He swept the final two stakes, winning the $150,500 Melair Stakes with Big Switch ($3.40) and the $101,000 Fran’s Valentine Stakes on Alice Marble ($3).  Hernandez also won the second race for maiden statebred fillies and mares.  The five-win day equaled a milestone for Hernandez, but was the best day of his career in terms of stakes wins. He won five races at Golden Gate Fields in March 2018 and in November 2019. :: Win big at Santa Anita: Get DRF Past Performances, Picks, Clocker Reports and Betting Strategies.  Hernandez overcame trouble to win the Fran’s Valentine, run at a mile on turf for statebred fillies and mares.  Hernandez rode Alice Marble for the first time in the Fran’s Valentine, the mare’s first start around two turns. Hernandez was aboard Alice Marble in recent workouts.  Hernandez had the heavily favored Alice Marble on the rail on the turn, but dropped back toward the rear of the field of seven when a rival in front faded from contention. Hernandez had to wait for racing room at a pivotal time, eventually guiding Alice Marble between rivals in early stretch. Alice Marble responded with an attractive rally to take the lead in the final sixteenth, winning by three-quarters of a length over 13-1 Sassyserb, who had trouble on the turn.  “I had a chance at the half-mile pole to move, but I didn’t want to move too soon,” Hernandez said.   “I decided to stay there and it got a little rough. I trusted my filly. I worked her last week and she worked nice.   “I watched her replays. She definitely comes with a run. As soon I found a hole, she was ready to run. She really kicked.”  Alice Marble was timed in 1:37.67 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 81. Flying to the Line (43-1) finished third.  Alice Marble, a 5-year-old mare by Grazen, races for owner and breeder Nick Alexander and trainer Phil D’Amato. Alice Marble has won 5 of 11 starts and $321,180.  Hernandez rode Big Switch for the second time in the Melair. On Feb. 25, Hernandez rode Big Switch to a fifth-place finish in a field of seven in an allowance race on the hillside turf course for the filly’s only start on the surface in five starts.  “I think she likes the dirt better,” Hernandez said.  Hernandez said Big Switch had a rough start in the turf race and was not comfortable.  The situation was different in the Melair from the moment Big Switch walked on the racetrack.  “In the post parade, she was dancing and happy and was comfortable,” Hernandez said.  Big Switch races for owner and breeder George Krikorian. By Mr. Big, Big Switch has won 3 of 5 starts and earned $214,544. The Melair was her second stakes win. Last November, Big Switch won her stakes debut in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies at seven furlongs at Del Mar on Breeders’ Cup weekend.   Big Switch ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.87 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 81. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Hernandez had Big Switch in a tracking position in third on the first turn and moved into second on the backstretch. Big Switch took the lead on the turn, and was quickly clear, pulling away to win by 4 1/4 lengths over 5-2 Rose Maddox.  “John said to give her a clean trip,” Hernandez said.  “I took back and waited to get her in the clear. She did the rest. She took the lead and never stopped."  Youteyourhonor (7-1) finished third, 10 1/4 lengths behind Rose Maddox in a field of six.  Through Saturday, Hernandez had won 87 races at the meeting, clear of Flavien Prat who is second with 72. Prat led the standings comfortably until he relocated to the East Coast earlier this spring. At the time, Hernandez was in second.
