Jockey Dylan Davis was listed in stable condition at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y., early Saturday afternoon with multiple injuries suffered in a spill Friday at Aqueduct. Davis suffered nine fractured ribs, a broken right collarbone, a right arm fracture, a partially collapsed lung and a kidney laceration, according to his agent Mike Migliore. Davis was aboard Tarpaulin in Friday’s seventh race when his mount fell over jockey Ricardo Santana Jr., whose mount Heavyweight Champs fell with a fatal injury to his left foreleg in the vicinity of the three-furlong pole. Santana, who was taken off his final mount on Friday’s card, was cleared to ride Saturday at Aqueduct. Tarpaulin suffered multiple cuts on his front and hind legs. Davis was initially transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, the closest trauma center to Aqueduct. With the assistance of Bob Rosenthal, a Thoroughbred owner who is also chairman of the advisory board of North Shore University Hospital, Davis was transported to North Shore University Hospital late Friday night, Migliore said. On Saturday - Davis’s 31st birthday - Davis had blood drained from his left lung, Migliore said. Doctors are also monitoring blood flow to Davis’s kidney, though “that is getting better,” Migliore said. Migliore said that Davis is in a lot of pain due to the rib fractures. While Davis has appreciated all the well-wishers, visitors are limited to family members, Migliore said. “He’s internally banged up,” Migliore said. “All he needs is rest and privacy with family.” It has not yet been determined how much time Davis will miss. Migliore said that Davis, when other issues improve, will likely have to undergo surgery to repair the broken right collarbone. Davis is the latest rider to suffer injuries and miss time at Aqueduct in the last two weeks. On Thursday, Sahin Civaci suffered hairline fractures of two vertebrae when he was unseated from his mount, Despo’s Dream, leaving the starting gate. On Nov. 8, jockey Ben Curtis was injured when his mount, Super Dreamy, fell over another horse, ridden by Kendrick Carmouche. Carmouche was fortunate to walk away uninjured. Curtis is sidelined indefinitely. On Nov. 7, jockeys Jose Gomez and Joel Rosario were also injured and missed at least a week. However, Gomez and Rosario are named on horses Thursday at Aqueduct. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
