Jockey Coates injured in spill

C.A. Shoemaker|Jun 12, 2008

FARMINGTON, N.M. - Jockey Jimmy Ray Coates suffered several broken bones when his horse fell into the path of another horse in the second race at SunRay Park on Thursday. He broke a femur, shoulder and collarbone, according to state steward Bob Allison.

Coates's mount, Ego Smasher, started bucking on the turn of the 870-yard Quarter Horse "hook race," and Coates came off on the inside of the horse. Ego Smasher then fell to the inside, just as Chicks on a Dash was rallying up the open rail. Chicks on a Dash catapulted over Ego Smasher. Gilberto Silva, on Chicks on a Dash had no reported injuries. Both horses were euthanized.
