Jini's Jet vs. Lockhart threesome

Rowland Hoyt|Jul 02, 2005

Any time the top Massach-usetts-bred horses get together for a stakes, it's going to be a family affair. In Monday's $40,000 Last Dance Stakes at Suffolk Downs, the field will include three horses trained by Lori Lockhart for her father and daughter, two pairs of equine half-brothers, and one big favorite in Jini's Jet.

Jini's Jet, a 7-year-old trained by Karl Grusmark, crossed the 20-win mark with his victory in the Rise Jim Stakes on May 30, adding another $24,000 to his six-figure bankroll. A win today will move him past $400,000 in earnings.

Jini's Jet won this race last year and was second in 2003 to solidify his reputation as the top statebred over the past decade. He will have regular jockey Dyn Panell aboard for the Last Dance, a 1 1/16-mile contest.

Lockhart has entered multiple-stakes-winning filly Ask Queenie, who perhaps can keep the pace honest and sneak away with the win. A former New England champion bred by Lloyd Lockhart, Ask Queenie will get a special achievement award this week from the New England Turf Writers. She hasn't missed the board in the last two years.

Lockhart trainees Lilly Be Nice and Puddle Time form a coupled entry. Puddle Time and Ask Queenie are half-siblings out of Time to Ask.

Half-brothers Storm Quest and Reality Quest are also entered. Storm Quest finished second to Jini's Jet in the Rise Jim and won a race at Aqueduct this winter. Reality Quest is 0 for 4 this year and makes his second start in a statebred stakes.

Grusmark will also send out Monsterous Mitch, who races mainly on the turf but was third behind Jini's Jet last August, when the Thomas S. Moran Stakes was washed on to the main track.

Jill's Jumpshot, who was claimed by Michael Collins on June 7 for $4,000, tries to bounce back from a 17-length loss in an open claimer. He was second in the Northampton Stakes last fall at the Three County Fair.

African Princess, a stakes-winning mare, completes the field and will try to improve on her third-place finish in the Isadorable Stakes on May 28, when she made her season debut.
