Jesstacartel dominates Super Derby
Jesstacartel was prominent throughout for a 1 1/4-length win over Quarter Horse champion and favorite Kvn Corona in Sunday night’s Grade 1, $925,100 Los Alamitos Super Derby.
It was another head back to A Political Lady in third.
Jesstacartel’s win earned him a berth into the Grade 1, $600,000 Champion of Champions on Dec. 15 at Los Alamitos. Kvn Corona was seeking to improve his record over the Los Alamitos surface to 10-for-10.
Jesstacartel ($8.20) was up by a half-length at the first point of call in the Super Derby and increased his advantage to the wire while covering 400 yards on a fast track in 19.57 seconds.
Cruz Mendez was aboard for trainer Mark Skeen.
Jesstacartel is a son of One Sweet Jess and races for his breeder, Lesley Joyner.
"He doesn't break super fast, but tonight he broke incredibly," Joyner told publicity at Los Alamitos. "The most exciting part was the middle of the race when he started pulling away."
Earlier this year, Jesstacartel won the Grade 2 Golden State Derby.
