Successful Florida sire Jess's Dream, the only son of Hall of Fame racemare Rachel Alexandra, was euthanized following a battle with laminitis, owner-breeder Stonestreet reported on Sunday. He was 12. Stonestreet announced last fall that homebred Jess’s Dream – by Rachel Alexandra’s fellow Stonestreet colorbearer and Hall of Famer Curlin – had been pensioned from stallion duty at Ocala Stud. He was gelded, and plans called for him to become a pony at Stonestreet’s Florida training center before health complications recently set in. “We are saddened to share that we lost Jess's Dream to laminitis,” Stonestreet posted on social media on Sunday. “The condition came on suddenly, and was unrelated to his retirement. Despite immediate veterinary invention, his condition deteriorated to a point where we were unable to keep him comfortable. He will be greatly missed.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Jess’s Dream, the first of just two foals out of Rachel Alexandra, was named for late Stonestreet owner Jess Jackson, whose purchase of Rachel Alexandra in the spring of 2009 and subsequent audacious campaign of her to defeat males three times in Grade 1 company helped her to Horse of the Year honors. Jess’s Dream did not debut until the summer of his 3-year-old year with trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, in a 1 1/8-mile maiden special weight on Aug. 24, 2015 at Saratoga. Green early and last of seven at the three-furlong marker, with 13 lengths to make up, Jess’s Dream found his best stride for a powerful rally in the stretch that carried him to a one-length win, earning a 90 Beyer Speed Figure. However, various issues kept him from ever racing again.  Jess’s Dream entered stud at Ocala Stud in 2017, and was Florida’s leading freshman sire of 2020. He has been a top 10 Florida general sire each year since, finishing third on the state’s earnings list in 2022 and second to perennial leader Khozan last year. His 100 winners from 149 starters through Sunday are led by Grade 3 winner Chess’s Dream; Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winners Intrepid Daydream and Sweet Dani Girl; stakes winners Beth’s Dream, Chacalosa, Dreaming of Snow, and Eileen Alexandra; and Puerto Rican Grade 1 winner Racing Dream. According to The Jockey Club’s Report of Mares Bred, Jess’s Dream covered 18 mares in 2022 for his final crop, foals who are now yearlings of 2024. Rachel Alexandra, now 18, resides as a pensioner at Stonestreet in Kentucky. She produced just two foals – Jess’s Dream in 2012, and the Grade 1-winning Bernardini filly Rachel’s Valentina in 2013. Foaling complications after both deliveries, including surgery and a lengthy clinic stay after the birth of Rachel’s Valentina, led to Stonestreet owner Barbara Banke, Jackson’s widow, pensioning the mare. Rachel’s Valentina, a broodmare at Stonestreet, is the dam of one winner from three starters to date. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
