Jess Good Candy wins All American Futurity
Jess Good Candy remained undefeated in four career starts on Monday when he won the Grade 1, $3 million All American Futurity, the most prestigious race offered for 2-year-old Quarter Horses. Jess Good Candy overcame a less-than-ideal start for a neck win over the favored One Fabulous Guy in the classic that closed out the meet at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico.
Jess Good Candy ($23.20) broke in at the start, bumped with a rival, and was crowded before he shook free from the early obstacles and began to lengthen his stride to strike the front. In the late stages, Jess Good Candy held off One Fabulous Eagle. The winner covered 440 yards on a track rated fast in 21.41 seconds.
Ivan Carnero rode Jess Good Candy for the estate of Carl C. Pevehouse and trainer Clinton Crawford. Pevehouse bred Jess Good Candy, a son of the Favorite Trick son Good Reason Sa, in Oklahoma.
Tf Im That Guy won a photo for third over second choice First Valiant Sign.
Jess Good Candy started his career with a maiden win April 24 at Remington Park. He then won a trial race for the Ruidoso Futurity and his trial for the All American before taking the finale, which featured a record purse Monday. Jess Good Candy earned $1.5 million for his first-place finish in the All American.
There was an inquiry following the finish, and it resulted in the disqualification of Lethal Volcom from eighth to ninth after he forced McClintock to take up sharply early in the All American. In a separate incident, Giving It All bucked and lost his rider in the race, and his saddle was found to have slipped, according to the chart for the All American.
