David Gomez won his first race as a trainer Saturday night at Delta Downs, where he sent out Jeff and J’s Dream to upset the $50,000 Owners’ Appreciation Stakes on the final program of the meet. The race shared a card with the $50,000 Owners’ Appreciation Distaff won by Vieja Luna. Both stakes were restricted to horses who had run in an overnight race at Delta in 2016-2017. Jeff and J’s Dream ($34.20) closed from last for a length win over even-money favorite Rise Up. It was another half-length back to Great Minds in third. Jeff and J’s Dream covered the mile on a fast track in 1:39.23. Juan Larossa was aboard for Gomez, who also owns Jeff and J’s Dream. The horse is by Marino Marini. Vieja Luna ($11.80) led throughout for a 1 1/4-length win over 4-5 favorite Mayla in the Distaff. The winner covered the mile in 1:38.55. Roberto Morales was aboard for owner Juan Landaeta and trainer Jose Camejo. Vieja Luna is a daughter of Street Hero.
