Jeb looks to resume winning ways in Massachusetts Stallion Stakes
Sunday’s card at Suffolk Downs features a pair of $50,000 stakes races highlighting the local breeding product.
A field of nine Massachusetts-sired horses will contest the Massachusetts Stallion Stakes, going six furlongs on the main track.
Jeb breaks from the inside post and will aim to continue a run of good fortune at Suffolk Downs, where she has three wins and a second in four starts.
The 5-year-old Zong mare comes into Sunday’s race off a tough-trip second in the First Episode Stakes on Aug. 6 at Suffolk, beaten seven lengths by Miss Wilby. Prior to that start, Jeb won a July 9 Suffolk Downs optional claimer by a front-running four lengths.
Luis Perez will have the mount for owner Cappy-Tavey Stable and trainer Dylan Clarke.
Brokers Prize also comes into the Stallion Stakes off a second behind statebred standout Dr. Blarney in the Last Dance Stakes on Aug. 6. A 4-year-old Silk Broker gelding, Brokers Prize has finished second in two of his four starts at Suffolk, and he generated the field’s highest Beyer Speed Figure of 2017 when he earned a 76 in the Last Dance. He won a Finger Lakes allowance going a mile in June.
Brokers Prize races as a homebred for Adel Salim, and he is trained by Jacqueline Falk. Jose Gutierrez will ride.
Prior to the official start of Sunday’s card, the John Kirby Stakes for Massachusetts-bred 3-year-olds will be run for purse money only as a non-wagering event.
Five statebreds comprise the field for the one-mile and 70-yard race, including Saint Alfred.
Saint Alfred won the African Prince Stakes on July 17 in his first start at Suffolk. Saint Alfred has turned in three consecutive bullet works at Finger Lakes, most recently going five furlongs in 59.80 seconds on Aug. 25.
Saint Alfred runs as a homebred for Joseph DiRico and he is trained by Karl Grusmark. Regular rider Tammi Piermarini will once again have the assignment.
The second half of the DiRico/Grusmark entry is Frosty Nurse, who broke her maiden in her fourth start last time out in the Louise Kimball Stakes at Suffolk on Aug. 6. The Frost Giant filly crossed the wire second in the race, but was promoted to first after being forced out by the winner in the stretch. Prior to that start, Frosty Nurse finished second to Saint Alfred by three-quarters of a length after setting the pace in the African Prince Stakes.
Mike Luzzi will have the mount.
