DEL MAR, Calif. – The undefeated filly Dreamfyre will have had one workout in the last month when she starts in Saturday’s Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs for 2-year-old fillies.
Dreamfyre won the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes at six furlongs on Aug. 12 at Del Mar and worked a half-mile in 48.80 seconds on Aug. 28. Trainer O.J. Jauregui said Dreamfyre had a strong gallop on Monday and will be exercised in a similar way leading to the $300,000 Del Mar Debutante.
Typically, a filly such as Dreamfyre would have had a second workout over the weekend in advance of the Del Mar Debutante.
“I don’t want to put too much speed in her,” Jauregui said. “Even though it’s a month between races, I only gave her that one workout.”
“I have to go with what I think is different.”
Owned by Danny Eplin, Dreamfyre has won twice, including a win against males in the Everett Nevin Stakes at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton on July 9 in her first start.
In the Debutante, Dreamfyre will face a challenge from recent maiden race winners such as Chatalas, and Tamara; Benedetta, who was second in the Sorrento; and Pushiness, who won the CTBA Stakes for statebred fillies on Aug. 6.
The Del Mar summer meeting ends Sunday with a program highlighted by the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs. The field for the $300,000 race is led by Prince of Monaco, winner of the Grade 3 Best Pal Stakes at six furlongs on Aug. 13.
