Jaramillo and Miss Hollywood an imposing team in Monroe Stakes
Emisael Jaramillo will be looking to keep a hot hand when he climbs aboard the solid favorite in the Sunday feature at Gulfstream Park in south Florida.
Jaramillo has a return call on Miss Hollywood in the $75,000 Monroe Stakes, a seven-furlong race that drew eight fillies and mares. Trained by Giuseppe Iadisernia, Miss Hollywood breaks from post 1 and will try to redeem herself for a defeat as the 1-2 favorite in the restricted Barely Even Stakes four weeks ago at Gulfstream.
Jaramillo, the all-time leading jockey in his native Venezuela, won three races Sunday at Gulfstream and three more Thursday when racing resumed following the usual three-day break. Jaramillo, who began riding at Gulfstream last summer, was the leading jockey at the three-month spring meet (April 6 to June 30) and trails only Tyler Gaffalione at the summer meet, which runs from July 1 through Oct. 1.
Miss Hollywood, a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Malibu Moon, was a 10-length maiden winner in April at Gulfstream in her third start. She then won a first-level allowance at Gulfstream in early June by a similar margin before being nailed on the wire by Killer Bird in the July 3 Barely Even.
Even though she turns back from a pair of one-mile races, Miss Hollywood figures as the pacesetter in the Monroe.
Probably her top challengers are Winning for Sarah (post 2, Jesus Rios), Dad’s Princess (post 3, Cornelio Velasquez), and Diamond Earring (post 7, Matthew Rispoli).
Winning for Sarah, the leading earner in the lineup with a bankroll of $294,494, won back-to-back allowances at the Gulfstream championship meet. Trained by Jena Antonucci, she finished second in back-to-back sprint stakes most recently.
Dad’s Princess will be making her third start since coming under the care of trainer Patrick Biancone, perhaps best known for his work with 1983 Horse of the Year All Along.
Diamond Earring will be making her first start in nearly 12 weeks after easily winning a first-level allowance for Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and trainer Kathy Ritvo, the connections of 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Mucho Macho Man.
First post Sunday is 1:15 p.m. Eastern, with the Monroe (6:02) going as the 10th of 11 races. Action began Friday at Gulfstream with a jackpot carryover of $217,246 in the 20-cent Rainbow 6, which runs Sunday from races 6-11.
After Sunday, Gulfstream goes dark for three days before another four-day week ensues Thursday.
◗ Entries will be taken Wednesday for next Saturday’s card, which includes four Florida Sire Stakes. The two richest races are the Dr. Fager and Desert Vixen, each worth $200,000.
