Jacobson turns over New York stable to Gullo

ELMONT, N.Y. – David Jacobson, the leading trainer on the New York Racing Association circuit in 2013-14, has turned over his New York stable to trainer Gary Gullo so he can concentrate on his string in Southern California.
Jacobson said he has turned over 15 to 20 horses to Gullo, including several whom Jacobson owns. Jacobson said he will spend time in both Southern California, where his son Howard serves as his assistant, and New York this summer. Being in California, where David Jacobson will be listed as the trainer of his horses at Del Mar, also gives Jacobson more time to spend with his recently born twin grandsons.
“I’m leaving all my horses here with Gary,” Jacobson said. “I’m kind of trying to figure out how to train the horses in both places. I’ve come up with a plan, I’m restructuring the stable. I need someone with Gary’s qualifications. Gary’s as good as they come.”
Jacobson, who set a NYRA record with 164 wins in 2013, was only 3 for 35 at Belmont this spring. That followed an Aqueduct winter/spring season in which he won seven races from 50 starters. At Santa Anita, Jacobson won 18 races from 104 starters over two meets.
“It frees me up to go back and forth freely,” Jacobson said. “Before I was restricted. I had to be here, I had to be there, I had to be in both places. With Gary here, I can bounce back and forth as I please.”
On Sunday in race 3, Gullo will be the trainer of record for Professor Snape, whom Jacobson claimed for $50,000 for himself and co-owner Bruce Golden last month.
