Jacobson and Drawing Away Stable team up again
The band is getting back together.
Trainer David Jacobson and the ownership group Drawing Away Stable, which three years ago ended a successful three-year run on the New York Racing Association circuit, is joining forces again, according to both parties.
Jacobson said that he will soon begin claiming horses for Drawing Away in both New York and Southern California, where he opened up a stable in December.
“We had a lot of success together,” Jacobson said by phone Monday night from Southern California. “We’ve both been doing very good, but neither of us have been doing as good as we did when we were together.”
Ed Boden, one of the principles in Drawing Away, said Tuesday that Jacobson approached him and his partners last Saturday at Aqueduct and the decision was made to reconnect.
“We talked for about an hour and decided we would work well together,” Boden said. “He’s got his way of doing things, we have ours, and we’ll blend things together. In the beginning, we had three fabulous years together. David feels we can rekindle that.”
Jacobson was the leading trainer in wins on the NYRA circuit for three consecutive years - 2012-2014 - including a NYRA single-year record 164 victories in 2013. Drawing Away was the leading owner in wins in 2013 with 89. During their time together, Jacobson and Drawing Away campaigned stakes winners Be Bullish, Saginaw and Strapping Groom.
Since they split in the spring of 2015, Jacobson’s win totals on the NYRA circuit have declined, bottoming out at 52 in 2017. Drawing Away won 20 races in 2015, 12 in 2016, and 24 in 2017.
When the parties split, Drawing Away began using many trainers.
Boden said that Drawing Away will continue to use Robertino Diodoro, John Toscano Jr., and Phil Serpe in New York; Eric Guillot and Bobby Dibona in Florida; and Robert Falcone in California.
Jacobson said he will keep his current roster of owners, which includes his brother Douglas (Jacobson Thoroughbreds), River Card Racing, and Bruce Golden. David Jacobson owns Stallwalkin’ Dude with Sol Kumin’s Head of Plains Partners.
“I’ll stay with the owners I have,” Jacobson said. “My main focus is getting Drawing Away and myself both to the level we were both at.”
