Jacks Masterpiece on familiar ground in Everett Nevin
Six wire-to-wire maiden winners are part of the field of nine California-bred 2-year-olds in Saturday’s $100,000 Everett Nevin Stakes at the Oak Tree at Pleasanton meeting at the Alameda County Fair.
Jacks Masterpiece is the only entrant in the 5 1/2-furlong race to have won over the Pleasanton track, having earned a field-high Beyer Speed Figure of 61 in his debut on June 24. Jacks Masterpiece opened up a five-length lead and won by 4 1/2.
Trainer Billy Morey noted that it took a few strides for Jacks Masterpiece to get his feet under him in the five-furlong dash.
“The thing about his wire-to-wire win is that he wasn’t in front the first 100 yards,” said Morey.
Morey said he’s bringing back Jacks Masterpiece sooner than he’d prefer after his maiden win, but it’s hard to resist a six-figure California-bred stakes at a track where the colt has already won.
“It’s hard not to try,” he said. “He ran super. He trained pretty flashy. We had some high hopes, and we’re happy he ran up to them.”
Jacks Masterpiece’s toughest rival could be the filly Kimberlea K.
Jerry Hollendorfer trains Kimberlea K, whose 5 1/4-length victory June 17 at Golden Gate Fields might have been the most impressive Northern California debut for a 2-year-old filly since Eclipse Award winner She’s a Tiger debuted in 2013.
“She’s fast, very fast,” said Hollendorfer, who passed on last week’s Juan Gonzalez Memorial to give his filly more time after her victory.
