Father’s Day could be lucrative for those who play the 20-cent Jackpot Rainbow Pick Six at Santa Anita Park on Sunday. Officials project a pool totaling more than $5 million, and there is a mandatory payout. There will be no carryover of any portion of the pool. The back half of the six-race sequence seems rather straightforward, so it may behoove players to take a shot with some larger prices early on. Here’s a look at Sunday’s Rainbow Six, beginning with race 4. Race 4, starter allowance Tough But Nice (4) appears to be the controlling speed, according to TimeformUS, and if that’s the case he’s a likely winner. A son of Good Journey, Tough But Nice ran creditably at a similar level two starts back, and a repeat of that effort makes him tough. In case the pace is a bit hotter than projected, Best Two Minutes (5) is worth using as an “A” first off the claim for trainer Reed Saldana. Best Two Minutes was no match for Tough But Nice two starts back, but he was much closer to the pace than he normally is. Ideally, he’d have someone else go and do the dirty work early before taking advantage. Backups in this race would include Top Brass (2) and Giddymeister (6). A: 4, 5 B: 2, 6 Race 5, optional claimer This race feels like the most difficult in the sequence to nail down, with a strong case to be made for more than half the field. Mucho Unusual (3) won a stakes in her first start going long and on grass most recently, earning a Beyer Speed Figure that is the highest last-out in the field. Ellie Arroway (2) also won going long on grass, except her victory came in a maiden special weight affair. Visually it was a solid effort, and she showed early on that she’s not dependent on having the lead throughout. Posh Holly (4) hasn’t raced since breaking her maiden last October as a juvenile, but natural progression from 2 to 3 makes her interesting from off the pace. Strike At Dawn (6) appears a bit slow on figs, but we’ve seen East Coast runners come west and make hay on grass time and time again. The remainder of the field makes sense in some fashion. They’ll all be used as backups. A: 2, 3, 4, 6 B: 5, 8 C: 1, 7 Race 6, starter allowance Tapitha Bonita (5) is strictly the horse to beat in the sixth race. She owns the highest last-out Beyer (78) and fits well in this field. If you’re inclined to try to beat her, Convince (7) is interesting first off the claim for trainer Doug O’Neill. Convince needs to prove she can handle the hike in class after breaking through at the N2L level most recently, but that doesn’t seem entirely out of the realm of possibility. A: 5, 7 Race 7, Possibly Perfect Stakes Pantsonfire (2) is a logical contender, and a repeat of her victory in the Grade 3 Astra in January is likely too much for this group to handle. Trained by Richard Baltas, this daughter of Sir Percy likes to do her running from the back of the pack, so she needs a favorable pace scenario to be at her best. Flavien Prat retains the mount, and understandably so, as she looms as a short-priced favorite. Horses to consider as backups include Mirth (4) and Siberian Iris (7). A: 2 B: 4 C: 7 Race 8, Grade 3 Affirmed A 3-year-old graded stakes race in California goes through Bob Baffert – a surprise to no one. Roadster (5) was disappointing in the Kentucky Derby last month, but that may have been due to the sloppy going at Churchill Downs. Returning to Santa Anita and reuniting with Mike Smith should be to the liking of the 2019 Santa Anita Derby winner. I believe his best is simply too much for this field to handle. The “other Baffert,” Mucho Gusto (6), is a nice horse, but I’m not 100 percent sold on him going longer. Nonetheless, he’ll be a backup, along with the wild card in the field, Visitant (1). A: 5 B: 6 C: 1 Race 9, maiden claiming There are no superstars in the Sunday finale, and it feels like three horses are the most logical contenders: Forecheck (7), Boru (8) and Zorich (10). If you’re looking for backups, consider Ohtani (1), who is trying grass for the first time and is a sibling to two turf winners, and the first-time starter, Mongolian Hero (2). A: 7, 8, 10 B: 1 C: 2
