Jack the Umpire stretching out on home track in Jean Lafitte
Jack the Umpire will attempt to back up a powerful allowance win with a stakes victory Saturday night in the $100,000 Jean Lafitte for 2-year-olds at Delta Downs.
The Jean Lafitte, which will be run at a mile, drew a field of eight including X Clown, winner of the Evangeline Downs Prince, and Something Super, who was second last out in the $100,000 Clever Trevor at Remington Park.
Sir Winsalot, who was a dominant allowance winner last out at Keeneland, has been scratched from the Jean Lafitte, trainer Kenny McPeek said Thursday.

◗ He enters off an 8 1/4-length conditioned allowance win Oct. 30 at Delta Downs. Jack the Umpire was prominent throughout the 6 1/2-furlong race run around two turns and will be seeking to win beyond a sprint distance for the first time Saturday. “He has exhibited to us that he should stretch out,” said Brett Brinkman, who trains Jack the Umpire for P. Dale Ladner. “His works have indicated that and his gallop-out the other night, on this racetrack in particular, makes us feel like a mile is within his reach.”
◗ Jack the Umpire launched his career with a six-length maiden special weight win in July at Delaware Park. He then ran eighth in the $100,000 Sapling in September at Monmouth and did not handle that surface, said Brinkman.
“We decided to come back home to Delta,” Brinkman said. “We started looking at this race in particular, got the allowance race to go, jumped through that hoop, so here we are.”
◗ Jack the Umpire was bred by Brinkman and Ladner. He is out of the Into Mischief mare Sittin At the Bar, a Louisiana-bred standout who won nine stakes races and earned $705,896. She was raced by Ladner and trained by Brinkman.
“She was a really good mare,” Brinkman said. “He has a lot of her tenacity.”
◗ Tommy Pompell has the mount from post 2.

◗ He was a maiden winner at Ellis Park, then shipped to Remington and ran fourth in the $75,000 Kip Deville and second in the Clever Trevor.
◗ The Jean Lafitte will be the first two-turn start for the son of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver. It also will mark his first race in blinkers.
◗ Delta will have special afternoon cards next Tuesday and Wednesday, and there will be no program Thursday in observance of Thanksgiving.
