Itsmybag isn't the only Rebel speedster

Mary Rampellini|Aug 02, 2002

Speed, speed, speed. There will be no shortage of it Sunday at Louisiana Downs in the $40,000 Rebel, a six-furlong race for 2-year-old fillies that drew a field of front-runners, including the promising Itsmybag.

Itsmybag has won her last two starts by a combined 11 lengths, and with a 2-for-3 career record is the winningest member of the six-horse Rebel.

In her most recent race July 21, Itsmybag set a pressured pace in an allowance race before drawing out to a 6 1/2-length win. Before that race, she wired Louisiana-bred maidens by 4 1/2 lengths July 7.

Keith Desormeaux co-owns and trains Itsmybag, who is bred for speed. She is a daughter of Bag, who was a stakes winner at 2, and the mare Avenger's Bouquet, who won 12 races, including a sprint stakes at Evangeline Downs.

In the Rebel, Itsmybag figures to face pace pressure from any number of her rivals, including Hadif's Allstar, who is by Hadif, one of the leading 2-year-old sires in Texas, and out of a half-sister to Grade 1 Jerome winner Evening Kris.

In her only race, Hadif's Allstar reached the front soon after breaking from a wide post in a five-furlong maiden race and won by six lengths.

Sam David Jr., who trains Hadif's Allstar, said he was impressed with the filly's professionalism.

"She looks like she's one of those horses that when game time comes, she puts on her game face for the competition," said David, who has given the mount to Alex Jimenez.

Leading rider Kirk LeBlanc will be aboard Itsmybag.

Other pace threats to Itsmybag are Paigaroo, who was the lone wire-to-wire winner on a Lone Star Park card when she made her debut June 3; Princess Birdeye, a front-running maiden winner last out; and recent wire-to-wire winner Slew's Sunny.

If the fractions are too fast in the Rebel, the horse that would benefit most is Rubies N Roses, who rallied from a stalking position to win her maiden as the favorite in her only race. Trainer Corale Richards has given the mount to Kerwin Clark.
