It’s Tricky, Emcee put in works

David Grening|Mar 23, 2012

It’s Tricky, winner of the Grade 2 Top Flight in her 4-year-old debut, worked four furlongs in 48.30 seconds Friday morning over the Belmont training track.

It’s Tricky is preparing for a likely start in the Grade 2, $200,000 Distaff here April 14. She also is under consideration for the Grade 1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn on April 13.

It’s Tricky worked in company with Broome Street, a 3-year-old maiden. The two were basically head and head until the wire, when It’s Tricky finished about a half-length in front.

Art Magnuson, assistant to trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, said exercise rider Renzo Morales said all the right things after the work.

“He said ‘I had a lot of horse, she was happy,’ ” Magnuson said. “She’s in a great routine this year. She wintered well in Florida, she’s carrying great weight.”

Magnuson said the work was done in company to ensure It’s Tricky got something out of the move.

If It’s Tricky runs in the Distaff, she will face defending Distaff winner Nicole H, who worked five furlongs in 1:01.21. Nicole H wound up getting mixed in with a pair of Bill Mott-trained workers, slipping through the inside of them in the stretch.

A short time after It’s Tricky breezed, Magnuson sent out Emcee, the third-place finisher in the Tom Fool, for a half-mile work that went in 50.23.

Emcee, pointing to the Grade 1 Carter, was accompanied virtually all the way to the half-mile pole by a pony and went off his first eighth in a pokey 14.14. However, he came home in a solid 36.09.

Magnuson was satisfied with that move and will work him once more before the Carter. Magnuson said there is a slight possibility Emcee could skip the Carter and await the Westchester at Belmont. The Westchester is run at one mile.
