It's Miss Sandy Dee vs. Cathy's Star III

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Cathy's Star and Miss Sandy Dee will be meeting for the third time at Assiniboia Downs in Sunday's $30,000 Winnipeg Sun Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles.

Miss Sandy Dee was 2 3/4 lengths better than Cathy's Star when she won the 5 1/2-furlong Victoria Day Stakes in their first encounter here May 20.

But Cathy's Star turned the tables on Miss Sandy Dee here July 1, winning the one-mile Canada Day by a half-length.

Miss Sandy Dee has drawn the rail Sunday, and probably will contest the pace along with Farrmost and Maui Money, who set the early pace together in the Canada Day.

Rohan Singh will ride Miss Sandy Dee, a Florida-bred 6-year-old who is trained by Patti Ross.

Cathy's Star will break from post 7, which might favor Miss Sandy Dee, who broke from the outside in the six-horse field in the Canada Day with Cathy's Star getting the rail draw.

But it is unlikely that Jacques DesAutels, the rider of Cathy's Star, will allow Miss Sandy Dee get to far away from her.

Cathy's Star, a Kentucky-bred 4-year-old, is trained by Gordon Marsh.

Miss Sandy Dee has won 11 of 46 races and $138,235 while Cathy's Star is 5 for 24 with a bankroll of $75,432.

Alberta invader Tecate has the best chance to pull off an upset.

Tecate, trained by Dale Saunders, has won two allowance races this year, one at Stampede Park and the other at Northlands Park, but has been well-beaten in her other four attempts, against stakes company.

An Alberta-bred 6-year-old, Tecate is the top money-winner in the field with lifetime earnings of $201,734. She has won 11 of 38 career starts and finished in the top three on 23 occasions..
