OZONE PARK, N.Y. – You only get one chance to make a good first impression and trainer John Terranova made one for a new client Thursday, when he sent out the 2-year-old filly Italian Soiree to a 5 1/2-length debut win Thursday at Aqueduct. Italian Soiree, a daughter of Uncle Mo who brought $600,000 at the OBS March sales, is owned in part by Hal Mintz, a hedge-fund manager who races under the name Hit the Bid Stables. Morplay Racing and Randal Hartley also own Italian Soiree. Italian Soiree did have to survive an objection from Rudy Rodriguez, the trainer of third-place Home Wrecker. Italian Soiree broke inward out of the gate and cut in front of Home Wrecker, but the stewards dismissed the foul claim. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! It’s nice when they put it together first out,” Terranova said Friday. “She had to overcome the start – surprising but not so much, they’re babies, you never know what to expect. She’s been great in the morning. She’s never been a problem.” Italian Soiree is one of nine 2-year-olds with Terranova purchased wholly or in part by Mintz, who is represented by bloodstock agent Seth Morris. It was Morris who recommended Terranova to Mintz. Terranova is assisted by his wife, Tonja. “They know what they’re doing, they treat the horses right. If they get the stock they can do it,” Morris said he told Mintz. “Someone’s going to be in your ear about going to one of the giant [trainers] and maybe we put a horse here or there with one just to give you a feel for it, but honestly, if you give them a shot, they’re going to do right by the horse and you’re going to have a shot to win and we’re going to do it the right way and have fun doing it. It’s great to get that first win.” Italian Soiree earned a 65 Beyer Speed Figure for her victory. Terranova said he will consider the Grade 3, $200,000 Adirondack Stakes on Aug. 4 at Saratoga for Italian Soiree. Among the babies Terranova is likely to run at Saratoga are Pediatric Princess, a daughter of Mendelssohn who could be earmarked for the turf, and a New York-bred filly named Savvy Sunset, by Maximus Mischief, who was purchased at the June OBS 2-year-old sale. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
