Islington takes Yorkshire Oaks

Alan Shuback|Aug 20, 2003

YORK, England - Islington won her second successive Yorkshire Oaks at York on Tuesday. A 4-year-old daughter of Sadler's Wells, Islington ran in third position behind the pacesetting L'Ancresse through the first 1 1/4 miles of the Group 1 Oaks, then pounced under Kieren Fallon to lead at the three-sixteenths pole. The odds-on favorite, Islington was ridden out for a one-length victory over the 18-1 Ocean Silk, with 25-1 Summitville third, another three lengths back. The winning time for the nearly 1 1/2 miles on good to firm ground was 2:27.44.

Winning trainer Michael Stoute said his goal for Islington is the Japan Cup, at 1 1/2 miles in Tokyo on Nov. 30, with the Champion Stakes at Newmarket on Oct. 18 or the Oct. 5 Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp possible first.
