This will be just the sixth running of this 5f handicap for three-year-olds rated 0-105, so more evidence is clearly required, but already four quite interesting areas are worth throwing into the argument.
There have been some surprise results down the years but this Group 1 affair for three-year-old fillies usually goes more or less the way of The Form Book and especially of late with 21 of the last 25 winners found at no bigger than 6/1 with 12 starting favourite or joint market leader.
The King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2) has long been a punter-friendly race, with 20 of the last 31 winners starting either favourite or second favourite, aided by just two double-figure fields in the last 13 years.
For the eighth year the Sandringham will be run as a standard handicap featuring around 30 runners rather than a Listed handicap so to all intents and purposes, it is basically now the fillies’ Britannia Stakes for three-year-olds. All bar one of the last 13 winners had run no more than twice earlier in the season.
Our ideal contender will be a four or five-year-old arriving here off the back of a victory and drawn in double figures - three strong trends for this handicap over 1m4f for older horses which produced just two qualifiers in 2022 and they went to provide the wide-margin winner, Candleford, and third. In addition, the 2019 and 2021 winners also hit all three trends square on the head when giving Hughie Morrison and Mark Johnston their fourth wins in this race.
This will be the eleventh edition of this Grade 1 race over 6f for three-year-olds which has proved to be such a hit. Race trends are only just starting to bed in hence the lack of pointers in the final summary.
