Inspiral cruised to an easy win in the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes on Saturday, the 500th win at Newmarket Racecourse for jockey Frankie Dettori, who plans to retire at year’s end and is in his final weeks of riding in England, his home base for about 30 years. Inspiral was an odds-on favorite in the one-mile straight course Sun Chariot, restricted to fillies and mares. Dettori knew he was sitting on the best horse in the race and rode like it, maneuvering his filly out of traffic halfway through and taking command a full three furlongs from the finish. Inspiral sailed down “The Dip,” the low portion of the Rowley Mile course, and came to the uphill finish with an insurmountable lead, crossing the line 3 3/4 lengths in front of runner-up Mqse De Sevigne. John and Thady Gosden co-train Inspiral for Cheveley Park Stud. The 4-year-old filly, a Group 1 winner in each of her three seasons of racing, is by Frankel out of Starscope, by Selkirk. She ran her record to 12-8-2-0 and has been all but unbeatable in races over good-to-firm turf like Newmarket’s was Saturday. It seems likely that Inspiral is coming to the Breeders’ Cup, but though she has never raced beyond one mile, her connections are considering not the Breeders’ Cup Mile, but the BC Filly and Mare Turf over 1 1/4 miles. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
