A one-two finish by Inspiral and Big Rock in the Group 1 Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville, France, last August led to milestone achievements for the pair later in the year.Inspiral won the richest race of her career last November by a neck in a thrilling running of the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita. A few weeks earlier, Big Rock had won his first Group 1 on Champions Day in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot Racecourse in Britain. When they start in Sunday’s $1.09 million Prix Jacques Le Marois, Big Rock and Inspiral can reverse what has so far been disappointing seasons. Both are winless in two starts in Group 1 races in recent months. They are among eight entrants, including the red-hot 4-year-olds Charyn and Quddwah. The Prix Jacques Le Marois, run on a straightaway course, is one of Europe’s leading summertime mile races, and has long-term ramifications for American racing, too. The winner receives a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Nov. 2 at Del Mar through the Win and You’re In program.Inspiral, trained by John and Thady Gosden, has a chance to become the first horse to win three runnings of the Jacques Le Marois. A 5-year-old, she is among four horses to win the race twice, along with Miesque in 1987-88, Spinning World in 1996-97, and Palace Pier in 2020-21. Miesque won the Breeders’ Cup Mile both years, and Spinning World won the Mile in 1997.Inspiral, held out of the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse in Britain on Aug. 1 in favor of the Jacques Le Marois, will have a new rider, with Ryan Moore replacing Keiran Shoemark.Earlier this year, Shoemark rode Inspiral to a fourth-place finish in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury Racecourse in Britain in May and a sixth in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes on June 19 at Royal Ascot. In 2022 and last year, Inspiral was beaten in her last start before winning the Jacques Le Marois.Big Rock has more to prove Sunday. He was sixth in the Lockinge and 10th of 13 behind Charyn in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes on June 18 at Royal Ascot.Charyn was favored in the Queen Anne Stakes, his most prestigious win in 15 starts, and will be well supported in the Jacques Le Marois. Trained by Roger Varian, Charyn has repeatedly been effective from a stalking position. He could be the runner to catch in the final furlong on Sunday.Quddwah will have his Group 1 debut in the Jacques Le Marois. Undefeated in four starts for trainers Simon and Ed Crisford, Quddwah won his group stakes debut in the Group 2 Summer Mile on July 13 at Ascot by racing close to the front throughout.
