Injury forces Battle Plan to retire

Glenye Cain Oakford|Jun 16, 2010

Battle Plan, injured while finishing second as the favorite in the June 12 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs, has been retired.

The 5-year-old Battle Plan tore a suspensory ligament in his right foreleg and is recuperating at Overbrook Farm.

Overbrook spokesman Ric Waldman said Wednesday that the horse's stud plans are under discussion. Battle Plan, an Overbrook homebred trained by Todd Pletcher, won the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap in March before finishing second to Blame in the Stephen Foster. He retires after winning 4 of 6 starts and $373,143.

Battle Plan is a son of Empire Maker out of Flanders, the champion juvenile filly of 1994.
