ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Indigo Gin won a strange renewal of the $75,000 Hatoof Stakes by a head Saturday at Arlington. Indigo Gin looked like a beaten horse at the quarter pole, Winning Envelope like a winning one at the furlong grounds, but when Winning Envelope put her feet in the ground in the final yards, there was Indigo Gin to get her head down and notch a first stakes win. “At the quarter pole, I thought I was going to be fourth,” said winning jockey Flavien Prat. Ambassador Luna rushed up from an outside draw to take the lead into the first turn of the Hatoof, displacing Indigo Gin, a front-running sort herself who was uncomfortable racing behind a horse. “She got really strong with me and I jus decided to let her go,” Prat said. Good call. Protracted wrestling matches with headstrong speed horses rarely end well, and even in the Hatoof it looked like Indigo Gin’s early intemperance would be her undoing. Winning Envelope, who came off the rail down the backstretch and was worked into a very favorable spot, kicked for home past the quarter pole, opened up and had the race for herself until the final yards. “I don’t know what happened, really,” said jockey Carlos Marquez Jr. “She hadn’t run in a while and might have just gotten a little tired.” Princesa Carolina surged late but hit the line just behind Indigo Gin, 5-2 favorite Winning Envelope holding third, three-quarters of a length behind Princesa Carolina. Dalika, the 3-1 second choice, never got into contention and checked in sixth. She scoped clean after the race, according to trainer Al Stall, who had no immediate explanation for the poor showing. Winning time for 1 1/16-miles over firm turf on the inner course used Saturday was 1:41.71. Spectralight and Be Nimble were scratched. Eoin Harty, winning his second race on the card, trains Indigo Gin for her breeder, Gainesway Stable. The filly is by Lemon Drop kid out of the Galileo mare, Lady Bingo and won for the third time in five starts. She returned $13.60. “She can be a little hot-headed,” said Harty, perfect for a blazing July day at Arlington.
