Indiana governor vetoes internet betting bill
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has vetoed legislation that would have legalized telephone and internet betting on horseracing in the state, citing his opposition to online gambling and an expansion of gambling.
Pence, a Republican, vetoed the legislation on Friday. Indiana remains one of the few major racing states that does not allow advance-deposit wagering, which is the only growing segment of the horserace betting market. Other notable racing states that do not allow online gambling on horseracing are Arizona and Texas, both also controlled by Republicans.
“This legislation is contrary to my long-time position against online gaming,” Pence said in a release. “Advance deposit wagering, not currently permitted in Indiana, would also violate my position on expanding gaming here in Indiana.”
Along with 11 casinos, Indiana has a Thoroughbred and a Standardbred racetrack, both of which operate slot-machine parlors. The tracks also operate five OTBs scattered around the state.
