Indiana Downs: Ayla Bella on streak

Dave Basler|Jun 16, 2005

Indiana Downs runs two $40,000 turf stakes Saturday, the Oliver for 3-year-old fillies at a mile and the A.J. Foyt for Indiana-breds at 1 1/16 miles.

Ayla Bella squares off against Flexible Princess in the Oliver. Ayla Bella began the year as a maiden for trainer Joan Scott but has since won 4 of 6 starts and comes into the Oliver on a three-race win streak.

In her last start, her first on turf, Ayla Bella stalked the pace to the stretch before scoring a five-length victory versus older nonwinners-of-four allowance rivals here at 7 1/2 furlongs on June 1. A repeat of that effort would make Ayla Bella the one to beat. Scott, who has won with 30 percent of her starters this year, has Eddie Zuniga riding.

Flexible Princess finished fourth, beaten 3 1/2 lengths, after setting the pace in a 1 1/16-mile allowance turf race last out at Churchill for trainer Maria Pinzon. Her 81 Beyer Speed Figure that day is the highest in the field. Willie Martinez will ride Flexible Princess, a winner of 2 of her 7 career starts.

Gottabeachboy will try to snap a long losing streak, taking a big class drop and heading a full field of 12 in the A.J. Foyt.

Gottabeachboy is winless in 13 starts since early 2004 but has been keeping much better company than what he faces Saturday. In his most recent start, Gottabeachboy dueled to the stretch before fading to finish fourth, beaten 3 1/2 lengths, in the Grade 3 Louisville Handicap at 1 3/8 miles on the turf at Churchill.

Gottabeachboy ran third in the Grade 3 Kentucky Cup Turf Handicap last year and has a huge class edge on grass over his Foyt rivals, despite having only two wins in 28 starts. Lori Wydick picks up the mount.

Heza Wild Guy a winner of 3 of 6 starts this year, including two turf races, looms the main danger.
