Indiana: Bisque withstands 30-1 longshot's rally in Indiana Futurity

John McDulin|Oct 19, 2013

Bisque held off 30-1 longshot Salute the Music by a head to win the $90,600 Indiana Futurity on Saturday afternoon at Indiana Downs.

Bisque ($7), trained by Tom Amoss, dueled for the lead early and was allowed to settle on the far turn. Jockey Marlon St Julien went to work and piloted the 2-year-old Bisque to victory in the field of 12. Salute the Music came flying up the rail to just miss, a length on front of Mr. Pollard in third. The running time for a mile over a sloppy, sealed track was 1:38.83.

Elegant Model ($6) was kept just off the pace by jockey Jon Court before rallying in the stretch to win by the $85,000 Miss Indiana by 2 1/4 lengths for trainer Tommy Drury Jr. Express Model was second, a half-length in front of Lady Caroline. The running time was 1:39.08.

Northern Candyride dueled for the length of the stretch to prevail by a neck over Flashy Kid in the $158,000 Too Much Coffee for older Indiana-bred colts and geldings. Ridden by Alberto Pusac for trainer Richard Kohnhorst, Northern Candyride ($5.60) came widest of all into the stretch after staying in midpack early. Northern Candyride ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.66.

Yeardley ($22.20), ridden by Willie Martinez, scored a one-length victory in the $156,100 Frances Slocum for older Indiana-bred fillies and mares for trainer Barbra McBride. The running time was 1:43.68.

Franklin breaks leg in spill

Leading jockey Malcolm Franklin was scheduled to ride both Bisque and Elegant Model but was unable to because of a spill on Friday. Franklin was aboard Coffee Dance in the seventh race on Friday when she broke down while on the lead. Franklin will have surgery on Tuesday for a broken tibia just below the knee and will be out indefinitely.
