Indian Charlie influence felt in juvenile Breeders' Cup races

Vequist wins the 2020 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filles at Keeneland
Debra A. Roma Vequist wins the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies by two lengths on Friday at Keeneland.

Indian Charlie never ran in a Breeders’ Cup race. But the late stallion, who died in 2011 after standing at Airdrie Stud, sired a pair of Breeders’ Cup winners, as his daughter Indian Blessing won the 2007 Juvenile Fillies and his son Uncle Mo took the 2010 Juvenile. Indian Charlie continues to have an influence through the next generations, including with Uncle Mo, as seen on the Breeders’ Cup’s Future Stars Friday program at Keeneland.

His descendants swept the top four spots in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, won the Juvenile Turf Sprint, and finished second and third in the Juvenile.

Vequist, who won the Juvenile Fillies, is by leading freshman sire Nyquist, who continues to follow in the footsteps of his sire, Uncle Mo, after emerging from that stallion’s first crop. Like Uncle Mo, Nyquist wrapped up an unbeaten juvenile championship campaign with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He has now sired a Breeders’ Cup winner and likely champion in his first crop, and is well on his way to the freshman sire title. Uncle Mo has gotten off to a smashing success with his first sons at stud this year and is the sire of three of the top four freshman sires by earnings through the Breeders’ Cup. Following Nyquist and Not This Time, by Giant’s Causeway, on the list are Uncle Mo’s sons Laoban and Outwork, both of whom had Breeders’ Cup starters.

Vequist defeated Dayoutoftheoffice by two lengths in the Juvenile Fillies. Girl Daddy finished third, and Simply Ravishing fourth, with the fillies in second through fourth separated by noses. Dayoutoftheoffice is out of the Indian Charlie mare Gottahaveadream. Girl Daddy is by Uncle Mo, who earlier on the card sired Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Golden Pal. Rounding out the quartet was Simply Ravishing, by Laoban.

Later on the card in the Juvenile, won by the Tapit colt Essential Quality, runner-up Hot Rod Charlie represented the Indian Charlie broodmare Indian Miss. She also is the dam of 2019 Sprint winner Mitole. Finishing third in the Juvenile was Keepmeinmind, by Laoban.
