The "Stars of Tomorrow" card on Saturday at Churchill Downs offered a variety of opportunities for 2-year-olds perhaps still finding their niche as their careers develop. The card presented stakes opportunities going both one and two turns on the dirt, along with several rich turf races. Impulse Buy ran well at a mile last out, but trainer Rodolphe Brisset believed the filly's niche might be in shorter races. His decision to cut her back on Saturday proved correct, as the filly overcame a slow start to swoop to a 2 1/2-length win in the $225,000 Fern Creek Stakes going 6 1/2 furlongs beneath the twin spires. Impulse Buy, a WinStar Farm homebred by the farm's late champion sprinter Speightstown, was second on debut going seven furlongs, broke her maiden at that distance, and was a solid second in the one-turn, one-mile Tempted in New York. But Brisset, familiar with many of the filly's relatives through a long association with WinStar, thought his charge might be better in shorter races. :: Bet with the Best! Favored Shisospicy had her head in front of the fray as she got a pressured opening quarter-mile in 21.70 seconds on the fast track. Impulse Buy, unhurried early by Tyler Gaffalione, had just one horse beaten down the backstretch, but began to make up ground as she settled into stride, and began to dispatch horses while wide on the turn. Shisospicy, despite being on the wrong lead late, still held a tenuous lead through the half in 44.30 seconds. But Impulse Buy, in the center of the track, had enough ground to work with. She surged by in the final strides and opened up to the wire. Echo Sound, last-out winner of the Myrtlewood at Keeneland, was outhustled in the early going and wound up covered from her rail post. She edged Shisospicy by a neck for second. The time for the 6 1/2 furlongs was 1:16.17. Now, Brisset has a filly he is looking forward to pointing to races such as the Grade 2 Eight Belles, back at Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Oaks undercard next May. “I’m glad she was able to run well today, and hopefully we will have a nice 3-year-old next year,” Brisset said. A few races earlier, Keep It Easy ($7.38) got a lovely stalking trip under Corey Lanerie and cleared the field to power to a 5 1/4-length win in the companion race, the $225,000 Ed Brown Society Stakes. He stopped the clock in 1:15.42 for the same 6 1/2 furlongs. Favored Tough Catch was a clear second, six lengths ahead of the filly Glean in third. Keep It Easy, a Hard Spun colt trained by Dale Romans, was a debut winner during the spring meet at Churchill, but then was eighth in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special after stumbling badly at the start. He made his first start since July a winning one. “After stumbling as bad as he did in the Saratoga Special, you never know how young horses will handle that mentally,” Romans said. “We’ve got a really nice horse on our hands and it was very impressive how he rebounded out of that race.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
