Improving Tizamagician may try San Pasqual Stakes

Tizamagician, winner of an allowance race at 1 1/16 miles last Saturday, may start in the Grade 3 San Pasqual Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on Jan. 30 at Santa Anita in search of an elusive first stakes win, trainer Richard Mandella said.
Owned by MyRacehorse.com and Spendthrift Farm, Tizamagician has won 3 of 13 starts. His best result in three stakes has been a well-beaten second in the Grade 3 Tokyo City Cup at 1 1/2 miles on Sept. 27 in what turned out to be his final start of 2020.
In the recent allowance race win, Tizamagician won by a half-length. He set the early pace and repelled a threat through the stretch by eventual runner-up Paladar.
“He seems to be turning a notch forward,” Mandella said. “He likes to bounce out of there and make a steady run.”

Saturday, Mandella will have two starters in the Grade 3 Las Cienegas Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs – Jolie Olimpica and Superstition, who both worked three furlongs Wednesday.
Jolie Olimpica, who was timed in 36 seconds, won the $100,000 Las Cienegas Stakes in 2020 when the races was run at 5 1/2 furlongs. Superstition, who will have her stakes debut in the Las Cienegas in her sixth start, worked in 36.40.
United, winner of four Grade 2 turf stakes in 2020 in Southern California for Mandella, has resumed galloping at Santa Anita. United was eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf on Nov. 7 at Keeneland, finishing 9 3/4 lengths behind Tarnawa.
“He won’t run for another 60 days,” Mandella said.
