Imprimis has second tie-back surgery

Imprimis, one of the top turf sprinters in the country, has had a minor setback in his bid to return to action this year but should be ready to go by late summer, with the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland his ultimate goal, trainer Joe Orseno said earlier this week.
Imprimis has not raced since finishing sixth in last year’s Turf Sprint at Santa Anita. He had throat surgery not long after that race, and needed a second, similar surgery, more recently, Orseno said.
“After the Breeders’ Cup, he was training at Gulfstream but started making a little noise. So he had surgery for an entrapment,” Orseno said. “He was just about ready to breeze again when he started making noise again, so we had to do another tie-back.
“The good thing is, he’s really fit. He was ready to breeze, so he should only miss about 30 days. I’d like to get two races into him before the Breeders’ Cup. We’re trying to do the right thing and hope he responds.”
Imprimis, a gelding, won the Grade 2 Shakertown at Keeneland in April 2019. He subsequently went to Royal Ascot, where he finished sixth in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes. Imprimis, 6, did not make it to the races until he was 4, and thus is still lightly raced. He has made 13 starts, winning seven, including four stakes.
