Impressive stakes win spurs interest in The Gray Dehere

The Gray Dehere came out of his blowout victory last week in the Prairie Gold Juvenile in good condition and is taking up residence at Remington Park, trainer J.R. Caldwell said Wednesday.
That much is known, but beyond that, there’s uncertainty.
The Gray Dehere, who shipped to Prairie Meadows from Lone Star, where he’d scored a second-start maiden win, won the Prairie Gold Juvenile by almost 15 lengths and got an 80 Beyer Speed Figure. Those are the kind of numbers that will set a trainer’s phone ringing, and Caldwell confirmed that parties have expressed an interest in buying The Gray Dehere. Caldwell is a co-owner of the colt, who is by Graydar and cost $12,000 at auction.
“There are negotiations going on right now, but nothing’s concrete,” Caldwell said.
The Gray Dehere got out late in both of his Lone Star races, the second with blinkers on, and while he didn’t run especially straight at Prairie Meadows, his talent shined over a longer distance, six furlongs, than he’d yet tried.
“The six furlongs helped him, that and maturity,” said Caldwell. “He’s a big colt who probably will end up going two turns.”
For whom, however, is an open question.
◗ Prairie Meadows Cornhusker winner Remembering Rita shipped on Monday from Prairie Meadows to Monmouth Park for a start Sunday in the Monmouth Cup. Trainer Doug Anderson said Alex Birzer would retain the mount. “So far, everything has worked out good with him,” said Anderson.
