Implicated gets cover, rides rail to Pebbles victory

OZONE PARK, N.Y. — Trainer Chad Brown knew Implicated was better than she showed in her 3-year-old debut last month. On Saturday, Implicated proved her trainer correct.
Never leaving the rail under Manny Franco, Implicated made the lead at just above the eighth pole and held the pursuers at bay through the lane to win Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Pebbles Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by a half-length at Aqueduct.
Sacred Wish, under Javier Castellano, rallied down the center of the inner turf course to get second by a neck over Startup Mentality, who was a nose better than Silver Skillet.
Rhiannon, the 7-5 favorite coming off just a maiden win, was fifth followed by On the Shortlist, Plentitude, Precious Avary, and Stephanie’s Charm. Precious Avary, who set the pace, was vanned off after the race and was reported to have bled.

Implicated, Startup Mentality, and Rhiannon were all trained by Brown, who won his sixth Pebbles, all since 2015.
Implicated, a daughter of Connect, had gone 2 for 3 at age 2, winning the Chelsey Flower Stakes here last October. Implicated didn’t make her 3-year-old debut until Oct. 19 when she finished fourth in a second-level allowance.
Brown was disappointed, believing he had the filly ready to run. One of his theories regarding the poor performance was that she was on the outside and in the clear.
With Implicated drawing the rail, Brown instructed Franco to keep her covered up and then try to make a run.
Implicated got the exact trip Brown envisioned, racing an up close fourth, just two lengths behind pace-setting Precious Avary, who ran six furlongs in 1:12.49 under Silvestre Gonzalez.
Precious Avary came off the rail turning for home, allowing Franco to shoot Implicated through the opening. She hit the front outside the eighth pole and proved best in the final furlong.
“A combination between her needing the race and getting her back covered up because last year when she was covered up she was better,” Brown said. “I said to Manny ‘You drew a nice cozy post, there’s speed in here, if you can get a pocket trip let’s test her out because I don’t know what happened last time.' Sure enough, a covered trip worked.”
Implicated, owned by Bradley Thoroughbreds, Belmar Racing and Breeding, and Cambron Equine, covered the mile in 1:35.82 over firm ground and returned $23.60 as the fifth choice.
Committing to the rail, Franco said “my only chance is to get through to the inside. I was glad I had the filly to make a move and she was there for me.”
Castellano, the rider of Sacred Wish, said he liked the unimpeded, outside trip he got.
“I wanted to be outside let her roll and that’s what I did, just second best,” Castellano said.
Since Implicated has made only two starts this year, Brown said he would like to keep her running. Among the options at Gulfstream Park for her would be the $125,000 Tropical Park Oaks for 3-year-old fillies on Dec. 23 or the Grade 3, $150,000 Suwannee River for fillies and mares 3-and-up on Dec. 30.
