Free Like a Girl, who was a $500,000 buyback at a recent auction in Kentucky, is scheduled to return to Louisiana next week, according to co-owner and trainer Chasey Deville Pomier. She said Free Like a Girl would likely ship into Delta Downs, but the stable also has a division at Fair Grounds. “She’s coming home,” Deville Pomier said Tuesday. “We’re just taking it day by day and will see what we’re going to do with her.” There are a number of options for Free Like a Girl, who is the all-time leading earner among Louisiana-breds with a bankroll of more than $2.5 million. Deville Pomier said the 6-year-old could be sold privately as her partners have been receiving inquiries. She said Free Like a Girl also could briefly race again, perhaps during the Louisiana Champions Day card Dec. 13 at Fair Grounds. Another option is to retire Free Like a Girl now, breed her next year, and offer her at auction in foal in 2026. “That’s the three kinds of things on the table,” Deville Pomier said. “We’re weighing our options right now and seeing what the best move is for her.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Free Like a Girl has been out of training the last several weeks as she has been in Lexington, Ky., for the Night of the Stars auction that was held Nov. 3 at Fasig-Tipton. If she were to run on Champions Day, her options would be the $125,000 Ladies Sprint and $125,000 Ladies Turf. Deville Pomier said Free Like a Girl also has stakes options at Oaklawn, in the $150,000 Pippin on Dec. 26 and the Grade 3, $250,000 Bayakoa on Feb. 7. “She hasn’t gone back to training and we’re not really in a rush,” Deville Pomier said. “I have her nominated to a few things, but I don’t think we’ll run her in at least a month. We’re in no rush. We’re just basically seeing what happens.” Deville Pomier said whatever develops, Free Like a Girl’s partners see her racing career as coming to an end soon. “If we’re going to breed her, we plan on being in the breeding shed in February,” she said. Among the stallions the partners have discussed for Free Like a Girl are perennial leading general sire Into Mischief. ◗ Jockey David Cohen, who has been riding in Southern California, is scheduled to begin competing at Delta Downs next week, according to agent Dylan Fazio. He said Cohen plans to winter in Louisiana. ◗ Fazio also said Isaac Castillo, who has been riding at Delta, is moving to Fair Grounds for the meet that opens Nov. 20. Castillo, who long has been a regular at Monmouth Park, rode the final stretch of the Louisiana Downs meet this season and went 26 for 60. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
