I’mgonnabesomebody sets track record in Joseph Grace Handicap

Allowed to set the pace, I’mgonnebesomebody has been tough to catch in two-turn stakes at Golden Gate Fields this year.
I’mgonnabesomebody won the Sam Spear Memorial Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on turf on Sept. 5 from the front. I’mgonnabesomebody won Saturday’s $54,300 Joseph Grace Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on the synthetic track in the same manner.
Ridden by Santos Rivera, I’mgonnabesomebody ($13.80) was timed in 1:41.95, lowering the track record. The race was scheduled for turf, but moved to the synthetic track because of rain.
The previous record of 1:42.15 was set by Now Victory in the 2007 Forty Niner Stakes.

Through the final furlong, I’mgonnabesomebody repelled Lammas and held off 8-5 favorite Freeport Joe, who closed from last in a field of seven to post a threat in the stretch.
Freeport Joe finished a neck in front of 10-1 Lammas. Kanderel finished fourth, followed by Harmon, A Man’s Man, and Jimmy Blue Jeans.
A Man’s Man, who had won six consecutive races since he was claimed for $8,000 in May, was as close as third on the turn before losing position.
