I’mgonnabesomebody is the most talented horse in trainer Bill McLean’s stable at Golden Gate Fields, and the orneriest.
Sometimes I’mgonnabesomebody cooperates in morning training, and sometimes he does not.
The occasionally wacky behavior does not extend to racing.
On Monday, I’mgonnabesomebody won his third stakes since early September in the $100,900 All American Stakes on the synthetic main track.
Ridden by Alexander Chavez, I’mgonnabesomebody ($12) stalked pacesetter Mastering to the turn before pulling clear in the final furlong to win by 1 1/2 lengths over 22-1 American Farmer.
I’mgonnabesomebody was timed in 1:36.63, winning his first start since a second-place finish in an allowance race in January.
I’mgonnabesomebody earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 94.
McLean said the win left him in an emotional state.
“That was so nice,” he said. “I had tears in my eyes. I couldn’t talk. I’m okay now.
“I was so happy. He’s so hard to train. He’s a good, good horse.”
American Farmer, who won the McCann’s Mojave Stakes for statebreds at Golden Gate Fields in March, finished a head in front of 9-2 Tripoli, the winner of the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar in 2021.
Rio King, second in the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile on April 29, finished fourth, followed by Royal Ship, Mastering, and Royal ‘N Rando.
Royal Ship, second to Defunded in the Grade 2 Californian Stakes at Santa Anita on April 22, was the even-money favorite in the All American. Royal Ship raced wide on the turn, but was not a factor in the stretch.
Defunded won Monday’s Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup.
I’mgonnabesomebody is owned by the partnership of McLean, Nin Auyueng, Sharon Broetzman, Philip Crosby, Cheryl Hauck, Todd Miller, Elizabeth Moran, and Marilyn Taylor.
A 5-year-old gelding by Will Take Charge, I’mgonnabesomebody has won 7 of 17 starts and earned $242,380.
McLean said after Monday’s win that I’mgonnabesomebody will be considered for the $150,000 Pleasanton Mile on dirt at the Alameda County Fair on July 9.
