Trainer Tony Duran has an exceptional background developing young horses, and one of the graduates of his program, Imagine the Moon, will start as a chief contender Saturday in the $100,000 Indiana Stallion Stakes at Horseshoe Indianapoli. The race for 2-year-old fillies is one of four Thoroughbred stakes on the card, all for Indiana-breds. The others are the Crown Ambassador Stakes, the Unreachable Star Stakes, and the Lady Fog Horn Stakes. There also are four restricted stakes for Quarter Horses at the end of the card. Imagine the Moon is part of a full field of 12 for the six-furlong Indiana Stallion Stakes. She was a little green. We put blinkers on her and it made the whole difference. I think the blinkers changed her attitude.” Duran and his wife, Katie, bred and own Imagine the Moon through their Rancho Monarca operation. The farm is about 10 minutes from Horseshoe Indianapolis and it’s committed to the Indiana-bred program and racing in Indiana. “The money is good, and on top of that, you’ve got your breeders awards,” Duran said. “We got some really good babies. I’ve got 10 yearlings this year to break and I’d say they’re top of the line for Indiana.” Duran has worked with some of the best young talent in racing. He was an integral part of the team developing yearlings for Nelson Bunker Hunt at his north Texas operation, the Circle T Ranch. About 100 to 120 head went through the program each season there, and they went on to race throughout North America and Europe. Duran later joined the Firestone operation and continued developing young horses in Aiken, S.C., as an assistant to trainer Bill Mott. These days, Duran is enjoying seeing his homebreds come to hand. On Saturday, Imagine the Moon will break from post 4 under Deshawn Parker. “She is quick,” Duran said of the daughter of Ready’s Image. “I think I’d say she’d be right there with the leaders. “I like her. She’s training good. I think she’s the horse to beat.” Fair Folly was supplemented to the Indiana Stallion off a maiden special weight win Sept. 12. Crown Ambassador Stakes The $100,000 Crown Ambassador is for 2-year-old colts and geldings going six furlongs, and it drew a field of 11. Good Forever enters off a fourth-place finish in the Indiana Futurity at one mile and 70 yards on Oct. 5. Solar Power won a maiden special weight over open company Oct. 13 at Indiana and owns the field’s best last-race Beyer Speed Figure, a 62.
