I’m So Anna won her first stakes in Southern California in her seventh career appearance in such a race in Friday’s $176,000 Fleet Treat Stakes for statebred 3-year-old fillies at Del Mar.
Ridden by Kyle Frey, for his first career Del Mar stakes win, I’m So Anna ($13.40) disputed the pace with 6-1 Teddy’s Barino throughout the seven-furlong race before gaining an advantage on that rival in the final sixteenth. I’m So Anna won by a length over Teddy’s Barino, who finished a half-length clear of 5-2 favorite Closing Remarks.
I’m So Anna ran seven furlongs in 1:24.34 after dueling with Teddy’s Barino through early fractions of 22.58 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 45.86 for a half-mile. I’m So Anna earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 76.
I’m So Anna took a narrow lead with a half-mile remaining and gave a game performance to win her third stakes in her 12th start for owner-breeder Kevin Nish and trainer Steve Sherman.
Fi Fi Pharoah finished fourth, followed by Eddie’s New Dream, Respectfully, Wishtheyallcouldbe and Joymaker. Amazen Grazen did not start.
Sherman, the son of trainer Art Sherman, of California Chrome fame, won his third career stakes at Del Mar and his second Fleet Treat. He trained Hollywood Hills, who won the 2019 running.
I’m So Anna, by the Medgalia d’Oro stallion Fast Anna, has earned $289,740 and has won two stakes at Golden Gate Fields – the Pike Place Dancer at a mile on turf last October and the Campanile Stakes on the synthetic main track in April. Frey rode I’m So Anna for the first time in the Campanile and for the second time in the Fleet Treat.
