I'm The Business edges Crazy Ensign

SAN MATEO - Jockey Garrett Gomez wasn't sure where the finish line was, but he had I'm The Business' ($9.20) nose in front at just the right time as she edged pacesetting Crazy Ensign to win the $61,100 Hillsborough Handicap at Bay Meadows on Saturday. She covered 1 1/16 miles over the Longden Turf Course in 1:43.05.

"I thought I did (win), but it was hard for me," Gomez said. "I'm not used to riding here. I don't know where the wire is. I got about a neck in front at the 16th, but my mare hung and that other one fought back."

Gomez was seventh in the early going, moving three wide on the turn to reach contention.

"She did everything perfect," Gomez said. "She didn't have as big a run as usual because I had her a little closer than usual."

The New Zealand-bred, trained by Roger Stein, scored her third victory in her past four starts. She was also second to Voodoo Dancer in the Palomar Handicap (G2) at Del Mar.

"I thought I got beat," Stein said of 5-year-old mare who has now won 4-of-24 starts and $198,357 after surviving a life-threatening illness and severe bout with ulcers last fall.
