Illman: Laurel horses to watch for week of Jan. 27, 2020
GAUZY
Trainer: Cathal Lynch
Last race: Jan. 26, 1st
Finish: 2nd by 2 3/4
Beyer: 56
Tonalist half-sister to stakes winner Fact Finding broke slowly, then raced wide around both turns in route debut over sealed, muddy track. Gave a strong bid in the stretch only to falter a bit in the final half-furlong. She's bred for route races and shouldn't be long for the maiden ranks.
CORT'N ASONG
Trainer: Hugh McMahon
Last race: Jan. 25, 4th
Finish: 2nd by 1 1/2
Beyer: 63
Pushed the eventual fifth-place finisher through some very fast fractions, opened up a clear lead and just got tired in a classic "won battle - lost war" scenario. Nice fit going seven furlongs or a mile in the $12,500 claiming ranks.
TWIN VALOR
Trainer: Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon
Last race: Jan. 24, 6th
Finish: 2nd by 1 1/2
Beyer: 73
He was the only part of the pace still hanging around at the end of this race and fought hard all the way down to the line after being softened up. Would be spotted nicely in an open $5,000 seller around a one-turn mile.
