DRF Breeding Staff|May 27, 2015

A catalog of 485 weanlings and yearlings will be on offer during the Japan Racing Horse Association July select sale, including several horses with North American ties.

The two-day sale will be held July 13-14 at Northern Horse Park in Hokkaido, Japan. Yearlings will be sold during the opening session, followed by weanlings the next day. Catalog pages will be available online on the JHRA’s website on May 29, and print catalogs will be mailed June 5.

Among the horses cataloged are a pair of yearlings from the first crop of I’ll Have Another, winner of the 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, who entered stud in Japan upon his retirement. He stands at Big Red Farm in Hokkaido.

The first to go through the ring will be a colt out of the Japanese Group 3-winning Old Trieste mare Maltese Heat, who has had three winners from four foals to race. The second, also a colt, is out of the unplaced Special Week mare Special Woman, who has also had three winners from four runners.

The yearling session also includes foals by sires with North American roots including Cape Blanco, Empire Maker, Girolamo Mineshaft, Street Sense, and Tapit. Notable Japanese sires with yearlings in the catalog include Casino Drive, Deep Impact, Heart’s Cry, King Kamehameha, Kurofune, Symboli Kris S., Victoire Pisa, Workforce, and Zenno Rob Roy.

North American ties are also apparent in the broodmares represented in the yearling session. Among them are a Stay Gold colt out of Grade 1 winner Wickedly Perfect; a Deep Impact colt out of Grade 1 winner Lush Lashes; a Deep Impact colt out of Grade 1 winner Hilda’s Passion; a Deep Impact colt out of multiple Grade 1 winner Contested; a Mineshaft colt out of Palace Rumor, dam of Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice; a Tapit colt out of multiple Grade 1 winner Champagne d’Oro; a Daiwa Major colt out of Grade 1 winner Ermine, and a Deep Impact colt out of Grade 1 winner Gaviola.

The weanling offerings include foals by U.S.-based or –bred sires Elusive Quality, Empire Maker, Hard Spun, Henny Hughes, I’ll Have Another, Johannesburg, and Midnight Lute. The group also features foals from the first crops of sires Orfevre, Lord Kanaloa, and Novellist.
