HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – The undefeated Little Miss Curlin is coming into the biggest test of her career, Saturday’s Dixie Belle at Oaklawn Park, in peak physical condition. “She’s got a coat that you can see your face in, in the middle of the winter,” trainer Patrick Devereux Jr. said. “She’s just beautiful.” The $150,000 Dixie Belle is a six-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies. The field of 10 includes four stakes winners, among them Revera, who won the Desi Arnaz at Del Mar; Woodstock, winner of the E.L. Gaylord Memorial at Remington Park; and Wakuda, winner of the Zia Park Princess. Little Miss Curlin, a three-time stakes winner, has won her four career starts against Louisiana-breds by a combined 18 1/2 lengths. She brings the highest career and last-race Beyer Speed Figure in the field into her first start against open company. “She’s really played her way into this level,” Devereux said earlier this week. “We’re just happy to be coming, and hopefully we give a good account.” :: Live racing action at Oaklawn Park! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Little Miss Curlin last raced Jan. 3, winning a division of the Louisiana Futurity while in hand at Fair Grounds. The timing of the Dixie Belle made it an appealing option, Devereux said. “It was kind of natural,” he said. “We needed a little bit of time. She ran four races pretty quick, and so we had this little break into this one, and she’s cranked right back up. She’s sharp.” Ramon Vazquez has the mount from post 6. “She’s gotten really tractable,” Devereux said. “You can let her settle in stride and she’ll pick up the bit whenever you ask her. We’re supposed to get rain. I imagine that will have something to do with [placement]. The jock knows the track a whole lot better than me. She’ll do whatever he says.” Little Miss Curlin has yet to race on a wet track but has a highly supportive Tomlinson Rating of 429. She is by the young stallion Charlatan, who won the Arkansas Derby. Little Miss Curlin’s dam, Mylady Curlin, was a Grade 2 winner of more than $800,000. Her dam’s sire, Curlin, also won the Arkansas Derby. Little Miss Curlin races for her breeder, Coteau Grove Farms. Revera lined up against some notable fillies last out at Santa Anita when she finished third in the Santa Ynez on Jan. 10. The winner, Explora, is a Grade 2 winner who was second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, and the runner-up, La Wally, was Grade 1-placed last year at 2. Manny Esquivel has the mount from post 7 for trainer John Sadler. Woodstock closed for third as the favorite in the Mockingbird Stakes last out at Oaklawn. Earlier in her career, Woodstock was third in the Myrtlewood at Keeneland. Francisco Arrieta has the mount from post 2 for trainer Mike Maker. French Friction and Just Bluffing are stepping into stakes company off impressive debut wins. Paving cuts back to one turn and is unbeaten at the configuration. Glazin’ Fury is proven on a wet track. Evolution brings speed to the table. A duel between Evolution, French Friction, and Glazin’ Fury could set the plate for confirmed closer Have Faith. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
