Idol on the comeback trail

Idol, winner of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in March, isn’t running in Saturday’s Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar, but could return to racing this fall.
Idol has not raced since the Big Cap, but did have his first workout since early April last Saturday, going three furlongs in 38.60 seconds at the San Luis Rey Downs training center in San Diego County.

Owned by Calvin Nguyen and trained by Richard Baltas, the 4-year-old Idol was sidelined in the spring with an undisclosed injury. Baltas has said he hopes Idol can be ready for major stakes this fall, possibly the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 6 at Del Mar.
“We’ll have to wait to see what happens,” Baltas said.
