Icon Project retired with tendon injury

Mike Welsch|Oct 23, 2009

MIAMI - Icon Project, who moved to the upper echelon of the filly and mare handicap division following her one-sided victory in Saratoga's Grade 1 Personal Ensign, has been retired due to a tendon injury, trainer Marty Wolfson confirmed on Friday.

"She's had a small lesion in her tendon since running over a muddy racetrack winning the New York Handicap earlier this year," Wolfson said. "But the area really changed significantly since she returned here and worked a couple of times following her victory in the Personal Ensign."

Wolfson also said that Icon Project, who is owned by Andrew Rosen, had developed a minor bleeding issue in recent weeks.

"She wasn't going to run in the Breeders' Cup regardless of this injury because I just didn't want to race her over the artificial surface," said Wolfson. "But Mr. Rosen was going to bring her back as a 5-year-old in 2010."

Wolfson said Icon Project will be bred next season to Giant's Causeway.
